“Poetry and Hums aren’t things which you get, they’re things which get you. And all you can do is to go where they can find you.”
Winnie the Pooh
Well, they certainly found me this morning at 3 a.m. Laid there for a while and mind began to race. Decided to go ahead and get up to accomplish at least something beyond staring at the ceiling.
Went downstairs and made coffee; thought I’d hop on the computer and do a little research and, of course, hop on Facebook to see who else was bright eyed and bushy-tailed in the wee hours. Only, the blasted computer wouldn’t connect. “What the hell am I gonna do now?”, I thought. Go back to bed – no, drink more coffee. You’re gonna be tired if you don’t – too bad get up and get to it.
So I did…put in a new load of laundry, grabbed my coffee cup, went into the living room and plopped into the chair. What now? An instant thought to watch Julie & Julia, again, made sense.
Now, I’m not sure if you’ve seen this movie yet or not, but it is based on a true story about a gal in NY who decided that she was going to replicate every recipe in Julia Childs’ book “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” over a one year time frame. The movie also follows the story of Julia Child from her beginnings as well. Did you know that it took Julia TEN YEARS to publish her first book? TEN YEARS! Talk about opportunity to throw in the towel and say forget it!
That’s the point – she didn’t quit, nor did Julie when deciding to challenge herself and her life by setting out on a mission to accomplish a goal. I’ve seen this movie probably around 15 times by now and only this morning did I have an epiphany: The true journey to accomplishing dreams and ultimate joy in life is unwritten. It all lies within the experiences and how you choose to respond to what you’re dealt.
One can be educated in the “system” to have the technical skills to become a dr., an attorney, a teacher, etc. What cannot be taught is the ambition and quite frankly – where to find the find the “cahones” to be crazy enough to try any terrible ideas you may come up with. That’s one thing.
Then, when you decide to go after your dream, how the heck you keep dredging along when no one else will believe in you. All alone – no money to begin – so how is it possible?
We are living proof that it IS possible! There have been numerous pessimists out there that have point blank told us that we are headed into “unrealistic expectations” (p.s. I got your unrealistic!)
Unrealistic, or crazy, as it may have been or continue to be as we proceed into the next chapter of our journey we have learned this: NEVER, EVER give up! If you want it, you’ll do it.
Back to Julia and Julia for a minute. These women both went through times of pure hell to get where they were ultimately to be and I cried right along with them because we’ve been there so many times in the past six years with this business. Cliche has become a very meaningful word to me now. If you can look within what is considered “duh” or “cheesy” amazing things can occur.
I’m referring to the realization that how we keep getting back up and trying again around here is by reciting “childlike” quotes. By childlike I mean reference to books, tv shows, and movies that are targeting children (e.g. “I think I can, I think I can”). When my babies were young I never really paid much attention to the programming within. I tell you, we really should though because there are some amazing lessons about life to be learned (plus, some of that stuff you don’t want your kids to be watching!). This was the first part of my “aha!”.
The second part was how we are truly an example of a blank canvas that hasn’t been molded or jaded by what the “book” tells you to do. Yes, I’ve read my fair share of business books and economics are important here, but it isn’t what keeps us plugging. One can have a Master’s in Business, but if thrown into the water would sink without the instincts necessary to evolve. That’s one thing that cracks me up about society – how do you have a professor teaching business that has never had their own? MmmmK.
So – here’s the jest. My goal:
Determine an inspiring childhood quote that reflects the candid experiences and lessons we incur while chasing our own rainbows once per day for a year (ish).
Why? If at least one person can reflect upon our journey and decide to step out of their own “rut” and go after something they’ve been dreaming of doing no matter what anyone else tells them – then this will have been a SUCCESS!
Here’s a final thought I had when reading “Bread n’ Jam for Frances” to my son this morning. Frances thought she wanted the same ole’ thing because she was so resistant and afraid of change. It wasn’t until she decided to take a risk and experience something new that she realized “taking a bite of the celery, the lobster salad, and the pudding one step at a time” would make it all turn out even.
May you dream of many unrealistic expectations :0) Oh, speaking of those – I almost forgot: Wine Cafe only a couple of weeks away!!!!
P.S. Please feel free to share about our blog to your friends. The more we can reach out the better opportunity we have to inspire (or corrupt) thoughts.
Cheers!
